Having been a keen British classic car enthusiast for many years (particularly fond of the Jensen classic cars of the early sixties) I only recently purchased a very advanced luxurious modern car. My new car is packed with what amounts to amazing technology. But even with such expensive modern cars I have found one poor design aspect. I am referring to the housing of the spare tyre and wheel. In the Jensen CV8 and before that, the Jensen 541S (as was the case with many cars of the early sixties) the spare wheel and tyre were stored under the boot and could be lowered from a point just inside the boot. The most obvious advantage of this was, that even if the car was full of people and luggage, in the event of having to replace a wheel, one did not have to take the entire luggage out to get at the spare. If a wheel needed to be changed, more often than not, if it is going to happen, it will be in pouring rain! Then the entire luggage would have to be out in the rain, for all the time, it takes to change the wheel and to get the dirty, wet, damaged one back in the boot!

Worst still, many of the new spare tyres now are of a special collapsed type (taking up less space) and the normal tyre will not fit in the space provided. So now the entire luggage and the dirty, wet, tyre will not be possible to fit back in to the boot! I expect the car manufacturers would claim, if challenged, that such a situation is unlikely to happen as it is true that there seem to be less punctures these days than before. However, I travel a lot in Spain and have found that there is a real risk of having a tyre deliberately punctured (with a knife) as a method employed by thieves intending to steal from you. Once your tyre has been attacked (often at traffic lights) they then follow you and point out your problem, offering to help, whilst another is busy robbing you. This has happened to me twice now, luckily without them succeeding in stealing anything. But on the one occasion my car was really packed full and I realised just how impossible it was to get at my spare. With my Jensen 541S it was an easy matter to jack the car up whilst keeping dry inside the car. Just in front of the two front seats the carpet was simply pulled away and a sealed cover opened. The Jack was then dropped down this hole and connected to the jacking up fitting, so that as one turned the handle the car could be lifted up.

Now I'd agree that you have every right to be sceptical that the Vauxhall VXR range which encompasses the (deep breath): Corsa, Astra, Vectra, Monaro, Meriva and Zafira, is no bigger or better than the deluge of other performance cars other manufacturers currently produce. They all promise that heady mix of the practicality and safety you get with the base model topped off with a sadistic, whiplash inducing engine for your extra cash.

Personally I'm at the stage in my life (well I'm 24 but I like to think I'm no longer a boy racer) where I want the speed but also a bit of sophistication. Gone are the days of strapping an exhaust the size of a small village to my shed and screaming "look at me" to the passing kebab houses. The fact there is so much performance metal to chose from means that prices are competitive and the standard is high. So what are the options? Well we can exclude the Golf GTi because I can drive, the Renault Clio F1 197 has an "F1 inspired rear diffuser" that shows as clear a link to their F1 car as the Arctic Monkeys are inspired by Cliff Richard. The Seat Leon Sport is brutish, the Mini Cooper 'S' is titchy and for hairdressers and the Honda Civic Type R is flawless...until they went and spoiled it all by doing something stupid like a new model. This then leaves us with the two great rivals, the Oasis and Blur of the motoring world: Vauxhall and Ford. Where Vauxhall have the Corsa VXR, Ford have the Fiesta ST. Ford Focus ST? How about the Vauxhall Astra VXR? Tit for tat these motoring giants slog it out with cars similarly specified and priced and with spot-the-difference performance figures. Personally I'm a VXR man, but sales figures show that both companies have fans of equal measure. Until we reach the completely unique Vauxhall Zafira VXR...

In many countries, when winter comes, rain soon follows. Some driving students have their road test on that day. They should have practiced for hours and know how to deal with rain. However, some students taking their driving test don't know how to handle rain driving and fail their test for it. Every driver should be familiar with car controls and when to use them. Some driving students, especially during their driving test, forget about the wipers and don't turn them on when it rains. During rain it's very important to keep the car visible to other drivers. However, some students neglect that and just leave their headlights turned off. This causes a severe danger to the driver and cars around him, and usually leads to a test failure.

Speed is also an issue when driving in the rain. Rain makes the road wet, which causes it to lose traction with the tires. This reduces steering ability and makes braking distance much longer than normal. By going even at the speed limit the driver puts himself in a risk of losing control of the car. This may lead to what the examiners call a "dangerous maneuver", which is a critical error. Turning during rain can be very dangerous. Many accidents have happened because of someone losing control during a turn. Some driving students come unprepared to their road test, which causes them to make wrong estimations about the proper turning speed on rain. In the best case, it can be marked as a minor error only. In the worst case, it can be deadly. Rain driving is a subject of many hours of practice. Every driving student should get some driving practice during rain to understand how rain driving is different from ordinary driving. This can save lives of many people. Driving students who practice during the summer should drive very carefully on their first rain driving after they get their license.

It always amazes me how efficient the Germans are. Whilst settling down to watch Grand Designs the other day, I saw an entire house built in a Bavarian factory, shipped to England and built in three days, all without mistakes and of course - with a top quality finish. It's the same story with sport, I bet Michael Schumacher could waltz back into the Formula One paddock, shake Lewis Hamilton's hand before demolishing him on the track, without breaking a sweat. German cars are no different and a perfect microcosm of this can be found with one look at the Volkswagen Polo. Staggeringly this car has been with us for 33 years and is just as popular today as the first model was in 1975, which sold over 500,000 units worldwide in just six years. Originally a rebadged Audi 50, the Polo was sold alongside it's Audi counterpart but was cheaper to buy. Unsurprisingly, the Polo outsold it's identical twin and Audi stopped production of the 50.

Buoyed by it's success a face lifted Polo appeared in 1979, with subtle styling changes to bring the baby Polo into line with the design of the existing Jetta Saloon (this included square headlights on the top-of-the-range 'Derby' derivative). It was VW's intention for this to act as a stop-gap until the Mk II Polo arrived in 1981. It's fair to say that Porsche are often criticised for having a lazy design studio, after all the 911 has looked almost identical for 40 years, but Volkswagen made a fair fist of clinching the title in 1981. The Mk II Polo was essentially identical to it's predecessor, although crucially what it lacked in originality of styling, it more than compensated for with build quality and reliability. Whilst it's main rivals the Renault 5, Fiat Uno and Austin Metro have long since gone to the great scrap yard in the sky, the Mk II Polo is still in plentiful supply on Britain's roads. Built until 1994, the Mk II also allowed Volkswagen to pioneer new technology - most notably a G-supercharged engine that would later be the basis for the one found in the Corrado and Golf. As with the Mk I, the second generation Polo received a subtle facelift in 1990 for the final four years of production. Despite new headlights and bumpers it still bore a near identical resemblance to the original 1975 model. One notable feature however was the introduction of a removable stereo/cassette unit, allowing for increased security and was a hit with buyers and is now de-rigueur with all in-car audio units.

A new top V8 model is making its debut in Geneva in the form of the CLK 63 AMG. The 100% AMG-developed 6.3-litre V8 engine under the bonnet promises a truly memorable driving experience. Available in both Coupé and Cabriolet guise, the CLK 63 AMG eclipses the power and torque figures for any other model in this segment with a maximum output of 354 kW/481 hp and 630 newton metres of peak torque.

The new AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine delivers truly explosive performance: the CLK 63 AMG Coupé sprints from standstill to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds (predecessor: 5.2 s), with the Cabriolet taking 4.7 seconds (predecessor: 5.4 s). The electronically limited maximum speed is 250 km/h. New AMG SPEEDSHIFT 7G-TRONIC promises extra dynamism
The new AMG SPEEDSHIFT 7G-TRONIC transmission is the perfect complement to the dynamic power delivery and can be operated using the AMG shift paddles on the steering wheel. The seven-speed automatic transmission caters effortlessly for both a dynamic driving style and a more comfort-orientated approach. Three shift modes specially configured for the performance characteristics of the AMG V8 engine enable its tremendous power to be harnessed to best effect. Selectable using a switch in the centre console, the shift modes in the CLK 63 AMG - "S" (Sport), "C" (Comfort) and "M" (Manual) – differ in terms of their shift characteristics and shift speeds.

Dr. Ing. h. c. F. Porsche AG of Stuttgart, Germany, is to expand its mid-engine coupé model range with the launch, in November 2007, of the Cayman S “Porsche Design Edition 1”, a limited-edition special series. Porsche has incorporated various design disciplines into this very special mid-engine coupé: the black exterior emphasizes the purist nature of the 295-bhp sports car and, at the same time, is a nod to Porsche Design and the famous Chronograph 1s designed by Ferdinand Alexander Porsche precisely 35 years previously.

This look, cultivated by Porsche Design, imparts additional luxury and class on the Cayman S: the black leather and Alcantara upholstery harmonizes with refined details such as the instrument dials, the layout of which reflects that of all Porsche Design chronographs. The original Mini was known among other things for its go-kart-like handling. BMW has managed to transport precisely that into the new age, with the new edition of 2001. And the recently launched 2006 generation once again sparkles with the typical Mini characteristics. And HAMANN has of course once again taken on the current model. The Brit from Bavaria not only looks different after its visit to the health farm in Laupheim. The HAMANN Mini also sounds better, and drives with even more agility.

One thing is clear: you will attract attention with the Mini, even in standard trim. The exterior of the Mini could however convey a little more sportiness. HAMANN can help out in this respect, clothing the little runabout in some sporty gear. The HAMANN aerodynamics kit includes a front spoiler to reduce lift, a pair of side sills with integrated, brushed aluminum doorsills, and a two-piece rear diffuser. Visually equipped in this way, it would not look out of place among the starters in the Mini Cup. The Mini draws even more attention as a result of the HAMANN flag-design decoration. Improving the sound of their car is one of the most important tuning measures for many drivers. The six wheel, four door, six seater stretch MINI Cooper S features the John Cooper Works Tuning Kit and was built by a specialist coach builder in Los Angeles. Fully loaded with all of the toys you would expect to find in a limousine, the MINI XXL comes equipped with a retractable flat screen TV, a DVD player, CD and radio, air conditioning, sunroof, full black leather and a telephone in the rear so that passengers can communicate with the driver. However, the highlight of the MINI XXL is the whirlpool integrated into the rear section of the car. The whirlpool seats two people and is easy to operate. Its detachable roof means that it can be covered when not in use and emptying it is a simple matter of pulling the plug to release the water.

To accommodate the extra body length of the MINI XXL, the car is supported by a third rear axle that has two additional wheels.

Mercedes-Benz is now presenting the world's first petrol engine with piezoelectric direct injection and spray-guided combustion. This 215 kW/292 hp six-cylinder engine will enter the market in the second half of 2006 in the CLS-Class. In the European driving cycle, this innovative injection technology from Mercedes-Benz achieves fuel consumption improvements of ten percent over the highly efficient V6 petrol engine with port injection and fully variable valve timing: the figures for the CLS 350 CGI are 9.1 litres per 100 km. Thus Mercedes-Benz has succeeded in combining a substantial increase in output with a significant increase in fuel economy.

This pioneering injection system is another trend-setting technology from Mercedes-Benz. It achieves much better fuel efficiency, and thus also higher thermodynamic efficiency, than conventional wall-guided direct injection systems. The new system will form the basis for future engine development work in this output class.

The main advantage of the CGI engine (CGI = Stratified-Charged Gasoline Injection) lies in the stratified operating mode from which it takes its name. During this mode the engine is run with high excess air and thus excellent fuel efficiency. Now, thanks to multiple injection, it is for the first time possible to extend this lean-burn operating mode to higher rpm and load ranges too. During each compression stroke, a series of injections takes place, spaced just fractions of a second apart. This has the effect of significantly improving mixture formation, combustion and fuel consumption. While stratified charge operation was previously only possible in the low part-load range, the new Mercedes direct-injection engine can still operate in this lean-burn stratified mode at speeds in excess of 120 km/h.

When driving on main roads and motorways at largely constant speed and with proper anticipation, the CGI engine outperforms the fuel economy of the six-cylinder engine with conventional injection technology by up to 1.5 litres per 100 km, a saving of up to 15 percent.

The trials of the fastest road sports car in the world have been successfully completed. One of the most ambitious projects in automobile history is entering its production phase. The first Bugatti Veyron 16.4 cars, built mainly by hand, are already being completed and will be delivered to customers this year.

The sports car, capable of more than 400 km/h, is driven by a 16-cylinder mid-engine, that at 710 mm long is no larger than a conventional V12 unit, and due to its lightweight construction weighs only about 400 kilos. Its compact dimensions are due to the unique arrangement of its cylinder banks in a W configuration. Two VR8 blocks, each with a fifteen degree bank angle, are joined in the crankcase to form one engine. Both eight cylinders are set at an angle of ninety degrees to each other and are aspirated by a total of four exhaust gas turbochargers. The engine delivers 1001 HP at 6,000 r.p.m. and provides a maximum torque of 1250 Newtonmetres at between 2,200 and 5,500 r.p.m.

To apply the power of the 64-valve unit to achieve satisfactory driving dynamics both in everyday traffic and on the racetrack, the Bugatti development team of Dr. Franz-Joseph Paefgen and Dr. Wolfgang Schreiber has realized a propulsion unit that is without parallel in its complexity. If the extreme engine power is a master stroke of genius, its conversion for road use is an equally tough challenge. As Dr. Schreiber says “For 1000 HP propulsion power, the system demands approximately 2000 HP to be additionally generated as heat energy during combustion. Half in each case is dissipated in the exhaust gas and cooling water”.

To do this, the Bugatti engine has two water circuits. The larger of the two with 40 liters of cooling water has three coolers in the front section of the car, to keep the engine at operating temperature. The second circuit, called the low-temperature system, has a separate water pump and contains 15 liters of cooling water. These are used to cool, by up to 130 degrees, the charged air, heated during compression in the turbochargers, in two heat exchangers mounted on the engine. The cooled, charged air then passes through two “air manifolds” into the combustion chamber, which it then leaves as exhaust gas at approximately 1,000 degrees. It then passes through the turbines of the exhaust gas turbochargers. This causes the exhaust gas to expand, so that it is cooled by up to about 150 degrees, is then cleaned in the catalyzer and exhausted.

The Ford truck team sat down with hot rod celebrity Chip Foose last year at the Specialty Equipment Marketing Association (SEMA) convention in Las Vegas – the heart of the red-hot $34 billion auto aftermarket industry – and issued a daunting challenge:

“We asked Chip Foose to design a tough, muscular street rod based on the Ford F-150 FX2 Sport pickup that will knock the socks off even the most hard-core boulevard cruiser fan,” says Ben Poore, Ford Truck group marketing manager. “And let’s make it available in less than a year before the 2007 SEMA show.”

Less than five months later, Ford and Foose are revealing the low-slung, production-intent Ford F-150 Foose Edition show truck, a precursor to the truck that will bow in the fall of 2007 as the most powerful and fastest half-ton production truck on the planet.

But right at that table, the seven-time winner of “America’s Most Beautiful Roadster Award” waved his wand – in his case a No. 2 pencil – and sketched out a conceptual offshoot of America’s favorite pick-up that looked like a true boulevard cruiser with design elements that visually lower the truck.

Hot rod magic
It started where the Ford F-150 Foose Edition meets the road, the big 22-inch original wheels that fill the wheel wells with larger flares, causing the pickup to look lower. Foose also designed and fabricated a custom rocker panel that enhances the lowered look even though the truck was only slightly lowered.

“How the vehicle sits and how the wheels are proportioned to the body is the first essence to give it the illusion of something lower than it is,” says Foose.

Wide, bold racing stripes further accentuate the planted stance. They start at the leading edge of the hood, helping to flatten it out. The striping thins out, stretches down over the front fenders, and runs the length of the vehicle above the door handles and across the tailgate for a streamlined look from the side. Then it widens again at the tailgate for an exclamation mark.

Foose also has replaced the Ford F-150 FX2 Sport’s dark billet grille and bumper opening with a new grille design with horizontal bars that makes the frame look shorter. Then, he has surrounded the design with lower rocker moldings that seemingly further drop the pickup.
